  1. Turn off appliances if you are not using them.
  1. Only have the lights on in the rooms which you are in.
  1. Use a washing line or clothes rail/rack instead of a tumble dryer.
  1. Don’t have long showers.
  1. Draught proof your house with things like draught excluders to keep the heat in.
  1. Keep your appliances clean to make them run more efficiently (e.g., get rid of lint in the tumble dryer, descale the kettle, defrost the freezer).
  1. Use electric blankets and hot water bottles instead of turning on the heating.
  1. Using energy saving lightbulbs.
  1. Turn down your thermostat.
  1. Wash laundry on an eco-cycle or lower temperature.
  1. Rotate subscriptions (if you aren’t sharing your parents’ netflix), so that you aren’t paying for many at the same time.
  1. Buy in bulk for non-perishable items where you can. It is often cheaper to do this and works out well in the long run, though it may be a more expensive initial purchase.
  1. If you need household items such as crockery or glasses or cushions, shop for these at charity shops instead of buying new at much higher prices.
  1. Try growing some of your own vegetables or fruit for a fraction of the cost in supermarkets.
  1. Pay for things like car insurance up front rather than monthly, as it is cheaper.
